What is ASATA’s Professional Programme?

ASATA’s Professional Programme (APP) was launched in 2010 to help professionalise the travel trade by providing a standardised and consistent method of skills analysis amongst travel consultants within the industry.

Who can participate in the ASATA Professional Programme

APP is open to any travel consultant who has practical experience within the travel industry, whether they are an ASATA member or not. This includes travel consultants, financial and operations managers and CEOs.

What are the requirements to apply for the ASATA designations?

For Travel Practitioner (TPrac) Designation:

• Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent NQF Level 4 Qualification

• Minimum two (2) years of practical working experience within the Travel Industry

For Travel Advisor (TAdvsr) Designation:

• Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent NQF Level 4 Qualification

• Minimum five (5) years of practical working experience within the Travel Industry

How does APP work?

As a consultant, the system will guide you on how to compile your own professional portfolio of evidence, monitor your skills and competencies and ongoing professional development, with confirmation from your Employer, who will verify your profile.

The APP involves a dual online process.

The first phase of the process involves registration onto the APP database. Interested individuals will register their details on ASATA’s APP platform prior to getting access to a range of questions which, once answered, compiles their unique profile. This profile includes details on any formal qualifications, workshops, educationals, webinars, etc. they have undertaken, and which is relevant to their role as travel consultants.

The second phase of the process involves application for either the TPrac or TAdvsr designations. A pre-requisite for the designation application is a GDS qualification. The consultants profiles will then go through a multi-verification process. If approved, the individual will then be awarded a designation as per the requirements related to SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) and ASATA.

The designation is valid for three years.

What skills are required for designation?

The core range of skills required have been arranged into 5 Competency Clusters i.e.

• Operational Skills

• Destination Skills

• Service Skills

• Business Skills

• Computer Skills

What is the cost to join the APP?

A once-off registration fee is required for all registrations onto the APP database.

A designation fee is required at time of application and thereafter a renewal fee on expiry of certificate.

The APP and designation application process are about ensuring they invest in their skills development and stay up-to-date with what is happening in their industry. By doing so, they invest in the longevity and professionalism of not only themselves and their careers but invest in the professionalism and longevity of your industry as a whole.
